Morro Bay – The Stacks

From some perspectives it looks like Cubist art. Three 450 foot tall concrete power station smokestacks have been a part of the Morro Bay shore since they were constructed in the mid-1950’s. The iconic stacks are colloquially considered to be as much an integral part of Morro bay coastal landmarks as the 581 foot tall Morro Rock, for which the city is named. The power plant was shutdown in 2014. Over the years there have been several attempts to provide plans or reasons for the stacks to come down, even a proposal to paint them green, all met with citizen unrest and protest. But the end of The Stacks is now under contract. They are to be removed by January 1, 2028.
